3月3日はひな祭りですね。
この日本ならではの「ひな祭り」を英語で説明したいとき、なんと言えばいいのでしょうか？

「ひな祭り」を英語で説明してみよう

1. 「ひな祭り」は英語で？

日本独特のものを英語で説明する際は、【そのまま日本語+説明】または【特徴を英訳】で表します。

• “Hinamatsuri” is a festival held on the 3rd of March every year, to wish for the growth and happiness of girls.
(ひな祭りは、毎年3月3日に祝われる、女の子の成長と幸せを祈る祭日です。）

• 「ひな祭り」の特徴を掴んだ、“Girl`s festival”や “Doll`s festival”と説明してもよいです。

2.「ひな祭り」は何をする日？

•　Families with girls will display a set of dolls called “hina-ningyo”.
(女の子のいる家庭では、ひな人形を飾ります。)

• The dolls are typically placed on seven steps called “hinadan”, with the emperor and empress at the top, followed by three ladies of the court, and five court musicians.
(通常のひな壇は７段あり、上から、内裏びなと姫、三人官女、五人囃子という順番で飾られています。)

•　On this day, we typically have traditional Japanese dishes like “chirashi sushi”(scattered sushi), “hina arare”(sweet rice crackers), “hishi mochi”(diamond-shaped rick cakes), and “shirozake”(white sweet rice sake).
(この日に私たちは、ちらし寿司、ひなあられ、ひしもち、白酒などの伝統料理を頂きます。)

3.「ひな祭り」にはどんな意味があるの？

• The origin of ”Hinamatsuri” dates back to an ancient custom called “nagashi-bina”.
(「ひな祭り」は古代の風習「流し雛」に由来します。)

• In this custom, people floated the dolls along the river because they believed that the dolls got rid of the owners` problems and bad fortune.
(この風習は、人形がその持ち主の問題や悪運を引き受けてくれると信じ、ひな人形を川に雛を流すというものでした。）

• Today, it is still believed that the dolls will protect the girls who own them from sickness and bad luck.
(今でも、ひな人形が持ち主の女の子を病気や不運から守ってくれると信じられています。)

• So March 3rd is an occasion when families with girls display hina-dolls to wish for their daughters` growth and well-being.
(なので、3月3日に女の子がいる家族はひな人形を飾り、娘たちの成長と健康を祈ります。）
