２月３日は節分の日ですね。外国の人に「節分って何？」と聞かれたとき、英語でぱっと紹介できますか？

今回は英語で節分を紹介する方法を学びましょう！

節分を英語で紹介する方法

節分は英語で？

日本独特のものを英語で説明する際は、【そのまま日本語+説明】または【特徴を英訳】で表します。

1. Setsubun is a festival held in the beginning of February, one day before the start of spring according to the Japanese luna calendar.

(節分は日本の旧暦で春の始まりの前日に行われるお祭りです。）

2. 豆をまくので、Bean throwing festival と説明してもよいです。

節分はどんな日？What is Setsubun

Setsubun means “division of seasons”, marking the day before the first day of spring. It is usually celebrated around February 3rd every year. It is a day we celebrate the coming of spring and wish for happiness throughout the year.

(「節分」とは、季節の変わり目を示す言葉で、春の始まりの前日を指しています。毎年２月３日あたりに祝います。春の訪れを祝い、一年の幸運を祈る祭りです。)

節分の日は何をするの？What do you do on Setsubun?

1. On this day, we usually throw roasted beans inside and outside our houses and at temples while saying, “Devils out! Happiness in!”

(この日、私たちは「鬼は外！　福は内！」と言いながら炒った豆を家やお寺の外と中に豆をまきます。）

2. After throwing the beans, we customarily eat the same amount of beans as our age, and wish for happiness throughout the year.

(豆まきが終わったら、年の数だけの豆を食べて１年の幸運を祈るという観衆があります。）

3. Another ritual we have is to eat a long sushi roll called Ehomaki , while facing toward the year’s “lucky” direction, wishing for good health, luck, and prosperity.

(また、恵方巻きを食べて一年の健康、幸運、商売繁盛を願う儀式もあります。)

なんで豆をまいて、恵方巻きを食べるの? What are meanings behind these rituals?

1. Some people believe that mame (beans) comes from the word mametsu which means to get rid of the evil. By throwing beans, we wish to drive evil away from us.

(「豆」は「魔滅」からきているといわれており、一説では、悪を摩滅するために豆まきをすると言われています。)

2. Beans are said to contains the evil of the previous year. By roasting and eating them, we hope to avoid evil from sprouting this year.

(豆は昨年起こった悪いことを含んでいるという説もあります。豆を燃やして、食べてしまうのは、豆に含まれる悪が芽を出すことを防ぐため共言われています。)

3.　The long sushi roll Ehomaki has 7 fillings in them, that symbolizes “the Seven Deities of Good Fortune.” We eat Ehomaki believing that it will bring us good luck.

(恵方巻きは７つの具材で成り立っており、これは七福神に関係した縁起物とされてきました。幸運をもたらすためにこれを食べる習慣ができたと言われています。)
