(1) I’ve been reading English essays which are posted with the hash tag of #311fromjapan. Many Japanese have been posting English essays to tell others what they think about the Great Tohoku earthquake.

(2) I found two things through reading essays.  One thing is that there are some charismatic Japanese. They are willing to tell other people what they think about the earthquake.  They are good at English enough to tell the situation of Japan to the   world. I’m surprised at how many Japanese are able to express their thoughts in English. Japanese are known as poor English learners, but there are really many good English Japanese writers.

(3) The other thing is that Tohoku is still not revived.  It has been more than one year, but many things are still not recovered.  Many essays say it takes time to revive Tohoku.  What I’m afraid of is the fact that people are forgetting the disaster area. I  found out that it’s easy for people to forget the things which aren’t related to their own lives.  It’s really difficult to maintain people’s interest to help the victims in the disaster area.

(4) We need to continue to remember Tohoku, but at the same time we need to find good ways to grab people’s interest. How can you attract people’s attention? I made English learning materials to maintain people’s interest in Tohoku area. Next is your turn.  Please tell me what kind of inspiring ideas you have.

(5) This time we chose 6 essays.  They will be published as teaching materials for a long time, at least 5 years. Using them, please remember Tohoku, and please visit Tohoku if you have the chance to.
